História de una fotografía: "EL BOSQUE VESTIDO"

Story of a photograph: “THE DRESSED FOREST”

Many times, what we don’t see is right in front of our eyes. Sometimes we are unable to see what the person right next to us can. It is not that unusual, it is just simply that there are different ways to look at and see things. If we accept that vision is conditioned for things such as the time the brain needs to adapt to something new and also allow a surprise to come into view without being censored, we are then opening a door to be able to see what we were looking at without having seen it. A game of words.

In complicated collections and with multiple characters, it can be difficult to see all what lies within and sometimes it can be complicated because this is how it is intended. Many times what is looked for is that the images that are created in our interior are built in complicated conjunctions that are impossible to see all at the same time and even on the same day; we are not always as awake internally. We can also play with this.

However, there are times that even the simplest images can be difficult to decipher. I’m not talking about a latent image in a real scene, but the image presented in a finished collection. Something that is supposedly understood and interpreted.

This is the case of the image that occupies us and its capacity to be invisible and to open the eyes of many visitors always surprises me. We are talking about “THE DRESSED FOREST”. The final work is the one that appears here below.

THE DRESSED FOREST is a picture that has valued itself. On its own it has stood out and occupied a privileged place in my memory. Not for the shooting difficulty, the necessary calculations or production; it was actually one of the simplest. Only a few times has ever a collection got so quickly from the shooting to the final collection. I think it that it deserves to be the first collection I speak about in my blog so to share its life with those interested in knowing about it. THE DRESSED FOREST was created on the 25th of December at 12:10 around 300 metres above sea level on the Spanish Coastline of Castellón. It was Christmas day and was created in this way: Confused and apparently out of focus.

Two days later, on the 27th, the final process was started to finish the job, leaving it ready for the last touches around 16:21. It was left in this condition:

On the 31st of December 2010 at 15:12 the job was done and nothing more was retouched. The files were prepared in two sizes: 1×1 metres and 40×40 cms. It was created for the “Nidondios” collection.

When I decided to conclude the collection I was satisfied with it. I was able to for the forest spirit, dressed as spring, to come out of its wooden costume to offer us a bouquet of flowers carried in arms. But I wanted something more.

I remember giving a conference on my collection in a University of Arts in the Russian city of Chelyavinsk. Whilst various photos from my collection were being projected on a cinema screen right behind me and I explained how we often looked without seeing, a large group of students affirmed that everyone could see what was in the images, against my affirmation that frequently we could see the most obvious things right in front of us and not because of being small. Right at that moment the image “THE DRESSED FOREST” was being projected and I left it just there while I asked around twenty of them what they were actually seeing. They all seemed to see the same thing: The forest was a man with a crown of flowers, holding a bouquet of flowers, with a red eye and seemed to be all made up of petals…..they waited for my affirmation that was what was being projected, and that was all there was. But the forest was in love with a beautiful woman with black skin like night who, from the left of the image, was giving a kiss on the cheek with her beautiful red lips. And nobody had seen it, even thought it was the same size as the man of the forest. In the first image you can see it clearly…..

And then they saw her. The discovered that she was there, that she always had been. So beautiful and so still that to discover her they had to accept the obvious is only the mask of reality

The laughter and mumbling grew amongst the students who could not believe that nobody had fallen for the beauty of the woman and her presence.

They made me repeat the projection and then they rediscovered many things that they hadn’t seen before and were not as hidden as the woman in the forest. The door opened for them for the first time, and when the door opens it never closes again. We were all happy.

From then on THE DRESSED FOREST has made the same impression on many spectators, that is why it is special and that is why it comes to my blog with love it deserves.

I would like to know how many of you had seen the woman from the very first moment; it’s just curiosity.

And…..mmmm….Is there something else to see?
