Three circles of confussion

A principios de 2015 Vicente Marcos y Juanjo Roda, a quienes unas fotografías de mis colecciones habían llamado la atención, me ofrecieron algo que consideré interesante desde el primer momento.

At the beginning of 2015 Vicente Marcos and Juanjo Roda, to whom some of the photos of my collection had attracted their attention, offered me something that I considered interesting from that very moment.

Querían preparar unos platos que estuvieran inspirados en mis fotografías. Pretendían traducir mis sensaciones a algo que se pudiera comer –literalmente–, de modo que lo que la visión de las fotos inspiraba produjera a través del sentido del gusto, algo que pudiéramos considerar sinestésico.

Their idea was to prepare some dishes that were inspired on my photos. Their intention was to translate my feelings into something that could be eaten- literally-, in such a way that what the vision of these photos inspired could be produced through the sense of taste, something we could consider synesthetic.

En varias sesiones hicieron un exhaustivo repaso a mis colecciones, viendo en gran tamaño, ampliando partes y deteniéndose en detalles de cientos de ellas. No sólo se quedaron en la superficie, sino que indagaron sobre el origen de cada disparo, ya que mis imágenes son en su mayoría no objetuales, y en las que el origen del disparo no se reconoce. Querían saber si su origen era mineral, vegetal, acuoso, etc. Querían saber qué sentía cuando buscaba los disparos o cuando las producía; qué buscaba con ellas y lo que pretendía expresar.

In several sessions they went through my collections over and over again, observing them in large size, pausing on particular parts and enlarging them further to scrutinize the hundreds of details that are contained in them.  They didn’t just look at what was on the surface, but, they inquired about the origin of each shot, as most of my pictures are non-object, and that the origin of the shot is unrecognisable. They wanted to know if their origin was mineral, vegetable, aqueous, etc. They wanted to know what it felt like when I looked for the shots or when I produced them; what I was looking for in them and what I meant to express.

Pasaron los meses, y se hicieron varias pruebas. Cambiaron muchas cosas, descartaron ideas…

Un buen día Vicente encontró una vía de acceso más rápida a la interpretación de mis imágenes, uniéndolas con el alimento a través del espíritu del vino, algo que todos entendimos como acertado al instante. El proceso se aceleró y las soluciones comenzaron a satisfacerles y a ser más exigentes a la vez. Se buscaron vinos incluso en Japón, las pruebas fueron más exactas. Yo, que por comparación con ellos soy un ignorante del tema, me dediqué a disfrutar de sus maridajes con las fotos y a descubrir el sabor de mis imágenes.

The months went by, and they did different experiments. Many changes were made, they rejected ideas…

One good day Vicente found a quicker way to reach the interpretation of my pictures by uniting them with food through the spirit of wine, something that we all agreed was right instantly.  The process speeded up and the solutions they were coming up with started to satisfy them, yet at the same time they became more demanding. They even looked for the wines in Japan, the experiments were more exact. Compared with them, I can say that I am quite ignorant on the subject, I dedicated myself to enjoying the union with the photos and to discover the taste of my pictures.

En Mayo de 2017 sus investigaciones y ensayos llegaron al punto de madurez necesario, los platos y su maridaje estaban preparados.

Prepararon una cena para doce invitados muy especiales, entre los que el invitado de piedra era yo mismo, el autor de las imágenes, que no había hecho ni un solo disparo pensando en el ágape. Todo se hizo realidad en Traiguera, en el santuario de la Virgen de la Salud, en el precioso salón-museo de los Borgia, del restaurante Els Capellans.

In May 2017 their investigations and rehearsals came to the point of necessary maturity, the dishes and their pairing were ready.

They prepared dinner for twelve special guests, among whose silent observer was myself, the author of the pictures who had not taken one single shot with this feast in mind. It all happened in Traiguera, in the sanctuary of the virgin of health, in the beautiful museum-hall of the Borgia, in the restaurant Els Capellans.

A los tres especialistas que prepararon el maridaje, Agustín, Juanjo y Vicente, no encuentro palabras que alcancen el agradecimiento que quiero expresarles. No sólo por disfrutar de sus creaciones, sino porque gracias a ellos, una obra que jamás se habría llevado a término: “El ojo que despertó” y que ellos llaman “el ojo del pez”, salió del archivo que había desechado por no encontrar lugar para él en la colección de los Somnios, y se convirtió en una de las piedras preciosas de la misma.

To the three specialists who prepared the union, Agustín, Juanjo and Vicente, I can’t find the sufficient words to express how truly grateful I am to them. Not just to enjoy their creations, but because it’s thanks to them, a work that would never have been completed: “el ojo que despertó” that they named “el ojo del pez”, came out of the archive that I had discarded because I couldn’t find a place for it in the collection the Somnios, and it turned out to be one of its precious gems.

Gracias también a todos los colaboradores en el evento y en su producción, y en especial a Pilar Diago por su apoyo gráfico en la preproducción y a Natalia Sílina, que diseñó y preparó la escenografía de aquella inolvidable noche.

Ha sido un privilegio compartir con ellos un buen montón de horas de mi vida.
