The Roquiticos is a series of photos shot on a rock at the edge of the sea but out of reach of the waves. The title has it’s meaning, a sense that I gave to the name “the inhabitants of the rock”.

About the collection ROQUÍTICOS(LA ROCA EN ÉXTASIS, 2014, 1×1 metros y 40×40 cms)

All these shots were taken on the morning of the 12th of October of 2012 after waiting a few months for the right light and luminosity that I needed to be projected on to the rocks, and with just the right angle so that the reliefs of the actors could stand out with the depth that I had calculated, and especially with the contrast I needed.

The series of reliefs that I had proposed myself to capture for the collection were all found to be placed on the same level with regards to the sun, the greatest difficulty I had was moving along that rocky site and finding the stability I needed for the shots to be exactly how I wanted.

For some time I had in mind a collection based on the small reliefs of rock for those I had done the necessary tests and calculations needed for conversion to my simultaneous reality, and I was torn between several various rocky areas in which to look for my final images. I had found some references for some of the ideas on different sites but I wasn’t really satisfied with the model I had to start out from, something was missing.

The visions were formed but they lacked the aesthetic unit that I would like for the collection.

I was looking for a series of an aquatic appearance, with earth emerging but very marine, with lots of blues and small boulders appearing as background; with colours that brought to mind corals, algae, mineral outcrops and oxides. I specially wanted that among the forms of the actors, I would be presented with an ilusion of a dense and deep blue sea, moving like a fluid through them. But not a blue that was too cold but one that would let me continue feeling it corporeal.

I also thought that various images were like visions from high above, where you could intuit forests on the earth’s surface; so the green’s should be compact and with plenty of texture, almost like an imaginary region full of lakes seen from out in space, with flowing rivers, with mountain crests merging from the bottom of the sea representing the actors. Some images were designed as more aqueous, others I felt should let some of the original scenery come through – something very rare in my production werein the starting object is not recognized-, in form of boulders so that the feeling of erosion made by the water was more evident. I even wanted to insinuate a land full of life hanging over an inmense cliff.

All this represented the vast amount of life hidden in something that was already made, like us, from the same stardust in which our life is supported. And then it was time to give life to this world or, simply, show the life that is hidden in the lifeless rocks, if they were willing to let us participate of their secrets

The life of any of those worlds is within ourselves, in our imagination, and we can’t imagine anything that doesn’t already exist somewhere in the universe.   And in this world, if you allow the simple pleasure of losing yourself, without limits, without censoring, accepting what you feel and imagine, or what you see is really in front of your eyes, you’ll be invited to a moving world inside a world that is physically still but not in spirit. And you’ll know the love between two stones, of it’s kings and wise men, one day, man decided to convert himself to a rock and crossed the new dimension to live in the heart of a precious stone; you’ll be able to listen to the most appealing arias from the voice of a female rock, you’ll admire the most beautiful of the rocks, you’ll see them move into ecstasy and they’ll be trapped in your dreams, you will find out that rocks have souls and there is a refuge so that the souls of stone can mingle with those of human beings and make them feel emotions from a completely different world. With all this in mind I didn’t need more script to begin to tell the story of this world and the beings that inhabited it.

But entering this word requires finding the door and the key that opens it; and that was something that I wasn’t finding very easy.

In full search of forms and textures necessary for the collection, one morning I decided to take a flask of coffee and something to eat and go and sit down, with two others, beside the sea to spend a while enjoying the lovely weather and the late summer breeze. I had barely arrived at a secluded area that allowed me to sit down reasonably comfortable when a cat appeared by my side and started to miaow and ask me for food. We made friends immediately.

We ate the food between us, after which I decided to relax, supporting myself between the rocks to look at the sea. But the pussycat didn’t want to leave me alone. He moved away a few meters and started to miaow. I spoke to him as a friend and asked what he wanted; in reply he moved away another meter and carried on miaowing. I decided to move closer to see what was wrong and he moved away again dissapearing around the corner of the rock hiding himself from my sight, but he didn’t stop miaowing. Full of curiosity I followed him to discover what it was that caused so much scandal when all of a sudden he stopped miaowing. To my surprise he had stretched out on a rock looking at me, offering me his tummy so that I would come closer and carress him. When I reached him he let me carress him a few seconds before he got up, moved away from the rock and miaowed gently a couple of times.

I had an ideal rock in front of me for the collection and the cat had taken me to it. I would never have found that corner and that perfect surface for what I wanted if the cat had not been my guide.

I returned several times to that place after making sure I could find it exactly, so I could analize the technical details necessary for my works, but the cat never appeared again. I’d never seen the cat before, but he just turned up, letting himself be carressed, he shared my breakfast, he took me to the rock and dissapeared just as he had come. Each of you can think what you want and convince yourselves that it’s just chance, but already, at the height of collection 26, I stopped believing in chances a long time ago. There were to be too many. The cat came to show me the door with the key in his mouth and, at the same time, fill himself up by having breakfast with me, but he payed me more than expected.

On January of 2013 I almost completed the first of the photos of my collection and the work continued until the begining of 2014. I left a couple of my works prepared with a minimal variation to make a decision about which to save a few months later, this I resolved towards april of 2014, so I ended the collection. A little over a year´s work work for a total of 18 ictures, and a year and a half  has gone by since my visit from my friend the cat.

Let’s take a little look at the rock to see the first references that I analized and out of which the final shots emerged.

(The first two images were not used in the final collection. The last three inspired ROCUARIUM TRICÉFALO, LA HISTORIA DE LA ROCA MÁGICA AND ROQUATICA AND LITHOS. The last two are present in this article and there are various characteristics in them that make them recognizable).

LAS OBRAS DE LA COLECCIÓN – THE WORKS OF THE COLLECTION

It wasn’t my intention to make this an easy reading at first sight, rather the contrary. I attempted to make the first impresion as landscape and a second more calmer look would help bring closer the beings that sprouted from the scene; forcing a more concentrated observation, great effort on the mind and eyes, each one your visions forming over mine. I will neither uncover all my games in this explanation, but I will present in some of the images the most apparent or superficial actors as an aid on how to look. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to observe the images with the intention of discovering one of “our” actors before passing to the next photo which presents several of the hidden characters

I will point out the most important of the Roquíticos of this image by isolating them from the surroundings on a darker duplicate of the original. It’s clearly sensed that my actors continue arising in second and third level.

For me every image tells a story that I’ll keep to myself so that each observer can enrich them with their own story, not limiting my words with the imaginary world of other visions. But certain questions seem universal, are they in a trance? Do they communicate with the mind? Are they all thinking the same? What are they looking at? Can each add their own questions to the work to try to find the answer.

The entire surface of the garden is raised on a high cliff, barely indicated by the long legs of the one of the actors. In this collection I felt that their presence with transformed colours helped to create the desired image.

In this collection I felt that their presence with transformed colours helped to create the desired image.\r\n

(ROCUÁTICA Y LITHOS. 2014, 1×1 metros y 40×40 cms. )

In this image, which can be seen above the first capture of reference, is very easy to follow the exact derivation of the conversion of the lines. Also appearing in the video is “ORIGEN DE LA OBRA” from my web and in facebook.

It’s clear that the scene tells a story, that I omit.

The main character that I point out here is the one that gives title to the work. In my opinion it is one of the most simple works of the collection and at the same time the most complete.

To finish with the presentation of this series, I remembered that the following work, while writing these lines, was being exhibited in Italy, it’s a good ending.

In it, human souls come to a place where they get together with the souls of the stones, and there, the roquíticos start to pass on the sensations of their lives to the souls of the humans, so they can integrate with them and become as one. The hearts of stone lose some of their hardness in this refuge, and when returning to the human world, they left behind much of their coldness. Roquitania transforms us. This is part of the imaginary world in which I based my work so I was able to give life to it.

The size limitations imposed by the media prevent us from appreciating these images with the proper refinement. For this reason, as a closing, I will be presenting some of the portraits of the actors appearing in this work. However, I’m not letting the cat out of the bag by telling you who among them are rocks or humans, this will be entirely up to you.

And the cat? Perhaps he has hidden in the image of another collection.

Once again… Thanks, Sandra! Great translation.
